It is vital at the moment that drivers understand the best way to protect themselves from the Coronavirus (Covid-19). Following advice given by the Department of Health and the HSE, we have compiled this guide to help you understand how to stay safe.
The department of health notes how it is crucial that drivers follow social isolation guidelines in order to avoid contracting the virus. Although those around you may not currently display any symptoms of the virus, the HSE documents how it can take fourteen days for symptoms to manifest.
Social Isolation Guidelines
Avoid any contact with another person. If contact is unavoidable ensure that you stay approximately two metres ( approx. 6.5ft) away from them.
When feasible and safe, drivers must also try to remain in the cab as much as possible.
When away from their vehicle, drivers should avoid public transport.
You should always:
- Wash your hands properly (for at least 20 seconds) and regularly
- Cover mouth and nose with a tissue or a sleeve when sneezing and coughing
- Dispose of all tissues immediately after use
- Wash hands after sneezing/coughing
- Use alcohol-based hand sanitiser when unable to use soap and water
- Avoid touching your face
If you are on a ferry you should:
- Avoid sitting near others (try to keep a two-metre/6.5ft distance at all times)
- Avoid queuing
- Essential workers should be assigned priority for single occupancy cabins
- Attempt to stay in your cabin for the majority of your voyage
- If possible, try to eat in your cabin
What Measures Drivers Can Put in Place in Case Of Emergency
- Make sure you keep your phone charged at all times.
- Make sure you have EU Member State emergency contact details and instructions before travelling.
- Carry alcohol-based hand sanitiser, to be used regularly in environments when there is the absence of soap and water.
