If you're a driver and regularly 'tramping', you know there is nothing worse than having plenty of time on your hands with nothing to do. The good people at Trucknet have let us know some of the ways they tackle boredom whilst on the road or on a long ferry crossing.
Streaming Video Services
Rivalling traditional TV in popularity these days, streaming services are the best way to go when you just want some entertainment on demand without the need for a TV aerial. All you need to get started is a device that can connect to the internet and you're ready to go. There are plenty of services to choose from such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Now TV, each with their own merits and exclusive shows and films. Netflix is well known for its original series' such as Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black and Bojack Horseman. Amazon Prime Video also has originals but tends to have a better library of American tv shows and movies. Now TV, owned by Sky, offers all the Sky entertainment and movie packages and often has newer films available.
It all comes down to personal preference and you can take a free month trial of all of them to find your favourite and while away the long hours on an overnight job.
Tramper
"UK Trucker slang for the driver or vehicle for long distance deliveries that may take several days. The vehicles themselves are large articulated lorries designed to allow the driver to sleep in overnight."
Audiobooks
Another great way to spend your time and relax after a long day is by listening to audiobooks. There are plenty of services like Audible that make accessing and listening to audiobooks as simple as ever. All you need is a device connected to the internet and your favourite headphones or a Bluetooth speaker and you're ready to go. Nowadays, you can find almost any book you could think of in audio form and they are often read by the author themselves or a well-known celebrity. For example, the Harry Potter series is famously read by Stephen Fry. Audiobooks are a great way to unwind and listen to a story without putting any strain on your eyes after a long day of concentration-heavy driving. Audible, like the streaming services, also has a free trial so no need to put your hard-earned money down without trying it first. The great thing about audiobooks is that you can also listen to them whilst driving, so if you find one that you need to know what happens next, you don't need to wait 'til your next rest stop to find out!
Books
If a traditional book is still your thing then, of course, this is still a good option to unwind after a long day. Some recommendations from Trucknet users included 'Battle Scars' by Jason Fox which tells the story of his career as an elite operator, from the gunfights, hostage rescues and daring escapes and the psychological devastation of combat that forced him to leave the military. It may not be a cheery read but it comes highly recommended. Several biographies from Steve Coogan and John Lennon were also recommended and are sure to keep you entertained.
