1. The World's Largest Hybrid Ferry Fleet

Since 2011, Scandlines have been developing a green ferry strategy with the goal being to be completely emissions free before 2040.

Scandlines converted six of their seven ferries to hybrid technology between 2013 and 2016. They now operator ships which utilise both traditional diesel power and electric batteries. This is the largest hybrid ferry fleet in the world.

2. Scandlines' commitment to the environment

It's not just the ferries themselves which are part of their green initiative. Sustainability in the business as a whole is the goal.

For example, Scandlines is also reducing food waste and turning areas around their ports into natural habitats for birds and insects.

3. Have you heard about the Rotor Sail?

The M/V Copenhagen vessel on the Rostock - Gedser route uses a wind powered propulsion technology called a Rotor Sail, which further reduces emissions. Think of it as a tall cylinder above the vessel which rotates (using a technology based on the Magnus effect) and helps push the ship through the water. This reduces the use of the diesel motors. The route between Rostock and Gedser is particularly windy, making this technology perfect for the M/V Copenhagen. The Rotor Sail has so far reduced CO2 emissions by 4%.

4. No dirty exhaust smoke in sight

As well as the hybrid system on board the ferries, Scandlines ferries are fitted with a closed-loop scrubber which cleans the engine exhaust of pollutants such as sulphur. This reduces emissions by at least 90%. The waste water produced is treated and disposed on shore in an environmentally friendly manner.

5. They connect the Baltic Sea

On the Puttgarden and Rostock routes alone, Scandlines provides over 120 departures each day. Connect this with the ferry + bridge options and customers have access to short transport times and supply chain flexibility between Germany, Denmark, Sweden and beyond.

Importantly, freight drivers also have access to showers and toilet facilities both in the port terminals and on board. Not forgetting free Wi-Fi at the terminals and discounted meal options in the restaurants.
